New Erotic Drawing by Thomas Rowlandson Revealed

A previously unknown drawing by Thomas Rowlandson has mysteriously revealed itself this week and can be seen here.

"The Old Harlot's Dream" has been kept in private collections for many years and though currently for sale for $12,500.

We're still not sure who currently owns the drawing or who is selling the piece, though will report back as soon as we know!

World Erotic Art Museum Day

It seems we just can't stop talking about Naomi Wilzig and her wonderful museum of erotic art!

On the day the World Erotic Art Museum in Florida celebrated its 5th birthday (16th October 2010) it was also proclaimed World Erotic Art Museum Day at Miami Beach by Mayor Matti Bower, as was declared by Commissioner Michael Gongora who attended the night's festivities.

"World Erotic Art Day in Miami Beach validates the integrity and importance of the genre of erotic art. The subject which has been submerged for centuries by puritanical sources is finally coming to light in all its glory of worldwide talent and beauty.

"Sexuality, sensuality, eroticism,romance and love are being raised to its highest plateau in the art world." Says Ms. Wilzig when asked what this award means to the Museum and the world of erotic art.

Many congratulation to Naomi and all involved with the museum!

Happy Birthday World Erotic Art Museum!

This week, the World Erotic Art Museum in Miami, Florida, will be celebrating its 5th anniversary by having a 5th anniversary party this Saturday!

Highlighting the evening, during which Ms. Wilzig will deliver a lavish buffet and entertainment that will cheer on all who attend, will be famed performance artists Geraldine and Shanaya. Adding to the glamour and fun will also be divas Adora and Victoria.

Open to all (must be 18 or over) with the normal museum entrance fee of $15. All proceeds will be going to the Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine.

This may seem like an unusual cause for Naomi (who is also a founder of the Hadassah Hospital in Jeruselem, the Wilzig Hospital Center in New Jersey, and the curator of the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC) to have chosen however she chose stem cell research so that no organizations targeting specific diseases would feel neglected.

"Stem cell research is the future of medicine. Research is underway using stem cells to treat heart disease, cancer, paralysis, AIDS and more. Every day, a new discovery is made about stem cells, and this will benefit us all," says Ms. Wilzig.

So if you're in Miami, and you don't have plans for Saturday night (16th October) get yourself down to the World Erotic Art Museum and join the festivities!

After a fascinating visit with artist Anthony Christian at his private gallery in Yorkshire, England, he has allowed ErotiCart to host some of the original erotic paintings that are currently for sale.

First up is a series of erotic paintings called "Knickers".

We also have a series of oil sketches by Anthony Christian.

Oil sketches, also known as oil studies, were first produced by early European artists as a method of providing a preview of a finished painting to their commissioner, though by the 17th century they were appreciated as complete works in themselves.

Rubens was very fond of this style, and is one of the most famous artists to use it. The French art critic Roger de Piles visited Rubens on occasion, and remarked on how Rubens oil sketches can have greater appeal to the sophisticated viewer than some of his more finished paintings. He describes how the organic, sometimes unfinished, composition of an oil sketch can create a more intimate connection with its viewer. Unlike a highly finished painting which leave little to the imagination, with an oil sketch the mind of the viewer interacts with the painting and not so much completes it, but becomes part of it, giving oil sketches a personal and dynamic feel.

ARTundressed - Erotic Art Exhibition, Miami

ARTundressed, the annual erotic art exhibition run by Erotic Signature, will be holding its third annual event at the World Museum of Erotic Art in Miami, Florida in November.

This year they will be exhibiting over 300 pieces by 120 erotic artists from around the world.

The ARTundressed exhibition will also include music, erotic performances, sexy fashion shows, Live Bands, Talents, Fashion Models, Deejays, BodyPainting, Live Art, short films, poetry, Drummers, Acrobats, and a lot more.

This year, ARTundressed will be hosted at Naomi Wilzig's World Erotic Art Museum between from the 18th to the 20th of November 2010.

Erotic Art at the Saatchi Gallery's Charity Auction, London

Next week (8-9 October, 2010) the Saatchi Gallery in London will be hosting a charity auction for The Art of Giving. It will be the largest sale of art for charity ever.

The exhibition features sculpture, installations and paintings by over sixty contemporary artists including Anthony Christian, Gavin Turk, Terry O’Neill, Steve Goddard, Tony Heywood, Alexa Meade, Dominique Besner and Zak Ove.

The highlight of the auction and exhibition will be the iconic "Crucifixion of the Female Principle" by Anthony Christian.

This painting measures a staggering 78" x 48" and is considered to be one of Christian's greatest paintings. At time of writing, it is believed to be the highest valued painting in the exhibition and is currently at £175,000.

As well as the Crucifixion, Christian has allowed a recent collaboration between him and his wife, who is also an accomplished artist, to be exhibited called "Sail Away".

Sail Away will be up at £35,000.

The exhibition will be open from 10am - 6pm on the 8th and 9th of October. Ticket prices are £10 for adults.

There will also be a private viewing on the 7th October. Tickets for the private viewing are £35.

Tickets are available for Art of Giving website and funds raised will be going to thirteen charities that are running life-changing and life-saving projects.

There is an upcoming exhibition of erotic art at the Hwajeong Museum in Pyeongchang-dong, Seoul, South Korea.

The exhibition will be featuring 114 erotic paintings and objects from Korea, China and Japan. There will also be a section for Western erotica. The exhibition will be running until 19th December 2010.

Erotic Art - Erotic Lithographs

Lithography is an ingenious printing process which involves a flat plate, usually made of limestone, where the surface has been treated with hydrophobic and hydrophilic chemicals so that when ink is applied to the plate it doesn't stick to the hydrophobic regions and moves to the hydrophilic regions. The plate is then pressed against paper to leave a print of an image.

The above method would of course produce a monochrome image, though during the 1890s color lithography was becoming increasingly popular with French artists using multiple plates, one of each color, and then printing one color at a time onto the paper. The main problem with this method was trying to keep each of the plates perfectly aligned. If they weren't, the colors wouldn't be in register.

Before then it was common for the Lithographs to be hand tinted like the ones below.

Printing of erotic images was at a peak in France from the 1800s to the early 1900s when they were very popular with tourists and sold as postcards, though very few of these "postcards" could actually be sent through the postal service due to stricter regulations of pornography. In fact, many of the images produced were illegal at the time and thus the majority of erotic lithographs are by unknown artist.

The Erotic Art of Gustave Courbet

Gustave Courbet is best known as an innovator in Realism (and credited with coining the term), Courbet was a painter of figurative compositions, landscapes and seascapes. He was from a time when the Romantics were in their prime like William Bouguereau who were painting in a highly finished style depicting beautiful mythological scenes. Courbet, however, was not a Romantic. Courbet, being a rebel at heart, portrayed reality in his paintings which brought him much criticism from the Romantics.

In the 1860's Courbet was more interested in the erotic elements of art than the political ones that were prevalent in his work. His paintings became increasingly daring, each painting slightly more extreme than its predecessor, culminating in the famous (and most beautiful) "L'Origine du Monde" ("The Origin of the World") which depicts the feminine genitalia in all its glory. As always in the case of erotic works, in spite of causing a furore and being banned from public display, this never did anything to diminish their great popularity...privately.

The Erotic Art of Auguste Rodin

Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) was a French sculptor most famous for his iconic masterpiece "The Thinker."

Unlike sculptors before him, he did not stick to the conventions of the past which had traditionally portrayed mythological scenes or icons.

He was from a similar period in time as Gustave Courbet, who is said to be the father of realism. Though it is uncertain whether Courbet influenced Rodin, it seems coincidence that many of Rodin's sculptures also portrayed realism which he was criticized for during most of his life.

Most are familiar with his sculptures though he worked in many mediums. He also painted in oils and in watercolours. The Musée Rodin holds 7,000 of his drawings and prints, in chalk and charcoal, and thirteen vigorous drypoints.

His paintings/drawings remind me of the style of a later artist Egon Schiele though his lines are looser with an Art Nouveau feel to them.

Again, like Courbet, the subject of many of his paintings was in-your-face nudity and eroticism. Courbet's most famous painting "The Origin of the World" (shown below) has a very similar feel to many of Rodin's works of art (shown above) where the genitalia take center stage.

The Sexiest Painting Leonardo (N)ever Made

The Mona Lisa is Leonardo da Vinci's most famous painting, and possibly to the most famous painting in the world.

From New York to New Delhi, everyone knows her face and the enigmatic smile. For centuries we gazed at that smile and imagined ourselves in her shoes (if she was wearing any) in an attempt to decipher the purpose behind it.

Many have described it as a "knowing smile." A smile that says "I know something you don't know!"

Well perhaps it is?

Perhaps if were able to take a few steps back, we would understand what it is that she is smiling about.

In a private gallery hidden by deep forests in the middle of Yorkshire, England, hangs perhaps one of the most astounding paintings I have ever seen. No, it isn't the Mona Lisa, but your close. It's called "When Mona Came to Tea" by Anthony Christian.

This colossal painting is over 6 feet tall and its impact is beyond words. Captured is, in fact, three paintings by the Leonardo; "Mona Lisa", "Leda and the Swan", and "The Virgin and Child with St Anne".

Anthony Christian is described as "the world's foremost Renaissance style artist" and his name has been known since the 1950s when he was accepted to study at London's National Gallery at only 10 years of age. To this day, no other artist has been granted this honour under the age of 18.

50 years later, Anthony Christian is still painting though rarely offers his art for sale . "When Mona Came to Tea" is no exception. The painting above is from one of his private collections known as the "LillyEgg Collection" though the artist has kindly granted permission for prints to be distributed by ErotiCart.

"The world's foremost Renaissance style artist" appears to have progressed to being the world's foremost erotic artist as well and we look forward to seeing what more is revealed from his private collections in the future!
